Maui Rental Car Office

What's a rental car lot without an office. Our new lot at 65 Vevau Street in Kahului came with just a paved surface, a fence, and a gate. So one of the first things we did was to put up an office shed. Kudos to Derek of Maui Shed Man. Building the new office took him less than two days from start to finish (including picking up the materials at the lumber yard), and the cost was reasonable. It's small, just 8' x 10' with a 4' x 10' covered porch. If we ever have to move, we can just detach the porch, load everything up on a trailer, and go.

Premium Sport Wagon - Maui Car Rental

From the day we added the Mazda Protege5 to the Frank's Friendly Cars Maui Car Rental fleet, in late 2010, it's been an absolute hit with customers. We now have several of these cars available to our rental customers, and we feel like we have to pry them out of their hands at the end of every rental.

What makes this car so popular with our customers? A sporty feel. A comfy interior. Plenty of carrying capacity. And stylish good looks. What more do you need?

We will be adding more through 2011. They're on the price list as the "Premium
Wagon," and they cost a little bit more to rent than the older economy wagons, because, well, they're newer and nicer. Book'em now, while they last.

Next Generation Corolla for Maui Car Rental

Until recently, most of the cars in the Frank's Friendly Cars Maui Car Rental fleet have been Toyota Corollas of the Seventh Generation, sold in the US from 1993 to 1997. For those who don't know this, the Corolla, first introduced in 1966, goes through a complete redesign every few years, resulting in a new "generation." Interesting facts: In 1997, the Corolla became the best selling automobile in history, with over 35 million sold as of 2007. Over the past 40 years, one Corolla car has been sold on average every 40 seconds.

The Seventh Generation Corolla has been wildly popular with Frank's customers, and, for a car rental on Maui, it has hard-to-beat safety, reliability, economy and practicality. With that said, we've also heard feedback from some customers who would prefer a more recent vintage car. At Frank's, we're always looking for better ways to serve customers, and we take customer feedback very seriously. So it's only natural that we are adding another line to the rental fleet: it's the Eighth Generation Corolla, sold in the US from 1998 to 2002. These cars live up to the dream of Toyota's Chief Engineer, who envisioned them as a "Mini-Lexus." They feature a completely redesigned, even more fuel-efficient engine. The interior and exterior styling are sexier and more modern. And, the drive-train components have been reworked for a smoother, quieter ride.

We have a few of these in the fleet now, and will be adding more through 2011. They're on the price list as the "Premium Compact," and they cost a little bit more to rent than the older cars, because, well, they're newer and nicer. Book'em now, while they last.

This makes two new lines for Maui car rental that we've announced for 2011. The "Premium Compact," subject of this post, and the "Premium Wagon," Mazda Protege 5, announced in a previous post. But that's not all. There are a few more things left to announce. Stay tuned.

Mazda Protege5 Sport Wagon

Frank's Friendly Cars Maui Car Rental LLC is always looking for better ways to serve customers. This means updating and expanding the rental fleet. For reasons that we don't really think we need to go into here, our bread and butter vehicle is the station wagon, aka elsewhere as the "break," or "estate." The Toyota Corolla wagon, wildly popular with our customers, was last imported into the US in 1996. All of our fleet Corollas undergo complete overhaul and renovation of the engine, drive-train, body, and interior components; the magic we work on these cars is so effective that we repeatedly hear from customers that their car "is in amazing condition, considering its age." However, on our tiny island, there are just not enough Corolla wagons - we've already bought most of the roadworthy specimens for our fleet. This poses a problem, as it limits our ability to expand our fleet and keep to the same standard of safety, reliability, comfort, and practicality that we can offer with the Corolla wagon. After extensive evaluation, we've decided to add a second line of wagons, and we've selected a new fleet vehicle that is already proving to be just as wildly popular with customers as the Corolla: the Mazda Protege5, also known outside the US as the 323 or Familia S-Wagon.

The Protege5 is a "sport wagon," meaning a cross between a hatchback and a station wagon. It combines practicality with performance, sexy styling, and economy. According to Mazda's President and CEO, Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda's mission is "providing 'Zoom-Zoom' cars that are fun to drive." The Protege5 fully lives up to this vision. The 2002/2003 model that we are adding is the end result of nine successive generations of development that started in the early 60's, making it a sophisticated, reliable platform. These cars get fantastic consumer reviews. Owners gave it an average of 4.6 on a scale of five stars in reviews posted on cars.com.

We have a few of these cars already in the fleet, and more coming through 2011. Book'em, while they last, and please don't come crying after they're all gone.
